Cases of COVID-19 in Buncombe County increased by 36 since Friday, May 29, as county health officials stressed the practice of the three Ws. Dr. Jennifer Mullendore said the number of lab-confirmed cases is now up to 342 and there has been an increase in the community beyond long-term care facilities. On Monday, Mullendore reported 29 deaths in Buncombe County and said 24 had ties to long-term care facilities.
McDowell County ramped up its COVID-19 testing after a spike in cases over the weekend. At Addie’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Marion, the testing began at 9 a. m. Monday. Health Director Karen Powell said there was already a line by then, and, by late morning, more than 60 people had been tested. The testing comes after 10 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed over the weekend. Powell said that brought McDowell County’s total number of cases to 64.
Starr County reported eight new COVID-19 cases this weekend bringing the total there to 35. The new cases include a woman in her 30’s “out of a military facility,” Dr. Jose Vazquez, the county’s health authority said Sunday. The new cases include 12 in Anchorage, four in Wasilla, three each in Eagle River and Kenai, two in Homer and one each in Anchor Point, Soldotna and one case listed as other in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, according to the state.
